DUCKING AND DIVING
Getting out of the shower, Adam felt much better. Just getting rid of the smell of cleaning fluid made him feel fresher. Now he had washed the blood from his face, he could see the damage. Already, his puffed eye was turning black and his lips were swollen, but at least his nose hadnât been broken. Hearing his mobile, he looked at it and saw it was Bruce calling. âWhatâs up Bruce, has Julie got you tied up in the cellar or something?â
âBetter than that! Oh, no, I didnât mean that,â stammered Bruce, âweâve just emptied those accounts of twenty million! Fuck me, Adam. One account only has fifty grand left in it. Julie is wiping them out.â
Adam punched the air. Twenty million in one morning! âBruce, oh my God, I canât believe it.â Together they burst out laughing. âWhat about her meeting? Is that still going ahead?â
In between excitement and laughter, Bruce confirmed it was. âAnyway, on another note, how was your date last night?â
âNot sure Bruce. I havenât heard anything from her all day, so it canât have been that good.â
âWell, why havenât you called her? Surely itâs up to you to call her and ask for a second dateâ¦?â
âWhy would I call her?â
âDo you know how egotistical that sounds, Adam? Youâre so used to women chasing you that itâs never occurred to you to do some chasing. If you like her, call her.â
Adam, realising his mistake, ended the call with Bruce and dialled Jenniferâs number. She seemed pleased to hear his voice and chatted on about her day and the wonderful evening sheâd had with him. Adam realised Bruce was right and heâd been an idiot.
âI left it later to call because I remember you saying you had lectures and I didnât want to interrupt,â Adam lied.
âWell, I did wonder. I thought maybe you didnât want to meet up again. I always feel like waiting for that second date call is the worst⦠Anyway, that doesnât matter now, does it. Iâm working later, but I could meet you after if you want?â
Adam was just about to agree when he remembered he was having dinner with Katie and the family. Heâd promised Scarlet and after today, he didnât want to break his promise. âI have a family dinner tonight, Jennifer, Iâm not sure what time it will finish. My sister has come from Italy and so itâs a big deal. What are you doing tomorrow?â
The disappointment in Jenniferâs voice was apparent. âTomorrow is good for me. No lectures as itâs a study day, which means Iâll be at home writing a thousand-word thesis and Iâm not doing any shifts tomorrow night.â
âTomorrow it is then. How about dinner? You will have worked up an appetite after all that studying. Will six thirty do you?â
âThat sounds lovely Adam, Iâd like that. Where shall I meet you?â
âIâll pick you up at your place.â Ending the call, he felt better. And now he could get on with the rest of the dayâs work.
